Haley Schubert tallied 24 points and pulled down five rebounds in leading the Lee women's basketball team to a 72-45 victory over West Georgia inside Walker Arena on Monday evening. It was the ninth straight win by the surging Lady Flames who improved to 12-2 overall and more importantly 10-0 in GSC play.
Schubert made 12 shots from the field, was 2-of-2 on 3-point attempts and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Mallory Hampton was the only other Lady Flame in double-figure scoring. She tallied 11 points, hit a pair of triples, dished off five assists and captured four rebounds.
Macy Woodworth, Hannah Garrett and Mia Hurst finished with eight points apiece. Morgan Carbaugh followed with seven points and five rebounds. The Lady Flames came on strong on the boards in the second half and finished the contest outrebounding the visitors 29-28.
"It was a great win for our group tonight," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe, who was presented a basketball representing his 600th coaching victory by athletic director Larry Carpenter. "We took a couple of good runs from West Georgia and responded each time.
"Out-rebounding them in the second half was big for us," added Rowe. "When we rebound and can get out in transition, that's when we are at our best."
The Lady Flames led 29-21 at halftime and watched a 21-point lead slip away as the Wolves went on an 11-0 run early in the third period. A quick timeout settled things down and Lee ended the period outscoring West Georgia 19-17. The final quarter was an entirely different story. The Lady Flames tallied 24 big points in the frame and allowed the visitors only seven to turn what looked like a close game into a 27-point win.
Lee shot 49% from the field (26-of-53) and made 9-of-23 triples (39%). At the free-throw line, the Lady Flames hit 11-of-16 attempts. Once again, Lee dished off 15 assists to only 10 turnovers. The Lady Flames held the Wolves to 37% shooting from the field (15-of-41). West Georgia attempted just 1-of-6 3-pointers (17%) and made 14-of-21 free throws. The visitors committed 20 turnovers and recorded eight assists.
Peace Okeke paced the losers with a double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds. Allyah Washington followed with seven points while Stephanie Torres and Aniedi Nsentip had six points apiece.
The Lady Flames will hit the road for two big GSC contests in West Tennessee. On Thursday, they will face Christian Brothers in Memphis and then move over to Jackson and battle rival Union University on Saturday afternoon.
"We are looking forward to getting on the road this weekend," pointed out Coach Rowe. "It is going to be a great test for our team."
