Lee University Defense Sparks Lady Flames to 65-46 Victory

The Lee defense held Alabama Huntsville to only 13 points in the first half and held a commanding 38-13 lead in posting a 65-46 victory over the Chargers inside Spragins Hall on Friday evening. The victory improved the Lady Flames to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in GSC play. UAH slipped to 1-6, 1-3.

Friday's win sets up a meeting with a pair of unbeaten teams in GSC action. While the Lady Flames were winning handily over UAH, West Alabama improved to 4-0 in conference play with a Friday victory over Shorter. Lee and West Alabama will tangle on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Livingston, Ala.

"It was a really good win by our team today," said Coach Marty Rowe, who has watched his Lady Flames struggle in years past in games at Huntsville. "I thought we defended with purpose and urgency especially in the first half. We still have a lot of room for improvement, so it is exciting to watch this group continue to grow."

Haley Schubert led the Lee scoring with 18 points. She made 8-of-13 shots from the floor and grabbed five rebounds. Mallory Hampton followed with 16 points and was 6-of-8 from the field. Anna Muhonen added 10 points (5-of-8 shooting). She also pulled down six boards. The Lady Flames outrebounded the Chargers 32-30 as Addison Smith again led the way with eight caroms.

After shooting 54% over the first three quarters, Lee cooled off in the final frame and finished the contest with a 48% shooting mark (26-of-54). Schubert, Hampton and Haylee Johnson were on target, combining to make six triples in 10 attempts, but overall, the Lady Flames made just 6-of-21 (29%).

Haley Nichols and Ellen Fleming were best for the Chargers with 10 points apiece. Madie Krieger followed with nine. The Lee defense held UAH to only 13% shooting in the first quarter (1-of-8) and that pretty well set the tone for the contest. Overall, the host warmed up in the third quarter and made 50% of their shots (6-of-12). The Lady Flames opened up a 27-point lead (57-30) at the beginning of the third frame.

Neither team shot well from the free-throw line. The Chargers were awarded 20 and converted 11 (55%). The Lady Flames took 11 free tosses and cashed on seven (64%). The Lee defense forced 23 UAH turnovers and the Lady Flames were guilty of 17 miscues.
