Scam Calls Alert | Sullivan County Sheriff's Office
Our agency has received multiple calls today from citizens advising that a scammer is making calls and impersonating law enforcement officials. The caller has told the citizens that they have missed court and that they need to pay a fine or they will be arrested.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office wishes to remind everyone that it will never contact citizens to advise that there is a warrant for their arrest. Likewise, no law enforcement agency will contact a citizen and tell them that they need to pay any amount of money to avoid incarceration.
Similar scams have circulated for several years now. One example is the scam in which the caller tells the citizen that he or she missed jury duty and must pay a fine or go to jail. If someone receives a call and they are unsure as to the legitimacy of the call, he or she should hang up and contact the organization that is being represented on the call to inquire further.
